The Unfathomable Wonder
Angels sang (Luke 2:13–14), mysterious Wise Men worshipped (Matthew 2:11), humble shepherds glorified and praised God (Luke 2:20), and an old man called Simeon said, ‘Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel’ (Luke 2:28–32).
What caused such a vastly different group of people to worship, praise and bless God? The answer is as astounding as it is glorious: ‘Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’ (Luke 2:11).
The Incarnation—the becoming in flesh of God the Son for us and for our salvation—provoked these eruptions of joyous wonder and delight. The Incarnation of the Son of God in the womb of the Virgin Mary is an unfathomable wonder. We will never get to the bottom of its wonder.
Charles Wesley put it well, ‘Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, hail the incarnate deity’. Here we shun speculation and are content to adore. Do you?
