OUR STORY

A confessional seminary in the homeland of the Westminster Confession

The Westminster Confession of Faith was written in Westminster Abbey during the English Civil War at the request of Parliament.  Completed in 1646 and approved by Parliament in June 1648, it remains the confession of faith of English-speaking Presbyterians.

Today numerous churches and denominations worldwide look to the Westminster Confession as their standard of doctrine, subordinate to scripture, recognising its blend of high theology, pastoral matters, and social life.

Sinclair Ferguson writes, “To an extraordinary degree [the Westminster Divines] studied in depth the same issues which trouble and challenge the church today, and their work continues to serve as an invaluable guide.”

The first in a hundred years

Wherever the Reformed faith has gone, almost the first order of business has been the establishment of a confessional seminary to sustain the long-term growth and health of the church.

But remarkably, for most of the twentieth century England was without a seminary committed to the Westminster Confession.

Founded in 2013

Ian Hamilton, minister of Cambridge Presbyterian Church, Joseph Pipa, president of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and Bill Schweitzer, minister of Gateshead Presbyterian Church, established Westminster Seminary UK in 2013. Westminster's first graduate completed his studies three years later.

The seminary gained Charitable Incorporated Organisation status in 2020, since which time the relationship between Westminster UK and Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary has matured into a flourishing partnership.

To train men committed to the historic Reformed faith

Westminster Seminary UK welcomes students committed to the historic Reformed faith regardless of denominational allegiance, recognising the shared heritage of the Belgic Confession (1561), The Thirty-Nine Articles (1571), the Westminster Confession of Faith (1646), The Savoy Declaration (1658), and The Baptist Confession of Faith (1689).

Christ has but one church, one bride, purchased by his precious blood, beautiful in his eyes.
