God is faithful to His promises

Faithfulness is often in short supply in this world. Promises are broken, good intentions are not followed through.

But, in contrast to what we see around us, God is faithful to all His promises.

That is seen pre-eminently in the coming of the Son of God into the world. God promised a Saviour in Genesis 3:15, “he shall bruise your head”. This promise was the centre of the Abrahamic covenant, “the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring… who is Christ” (Gal. 3:16). It was repeated in the Mosaic Covenant, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you” (Deut. 18:15). It was the promise of the Davidic covenant, “I will establish his offspring for ever” (Ps. 89:29). It was the promise of the prophets, “For to us a child is born” (Isa. 9:6).

No wonder, then, that Mary saw the incarnation as the expression of God’s faithfulness to His promises—“as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring for ever” (Luke 1:55).

As we reflect on the incarnation, that should be our thought—God is faithful to His promises! He has provided a Saviour!
