The Supreme Blessing of the Gospel

The Son of God became the Son of Man so that the sons of men might become sons of God. This is at the heart of Christmas; indeed, it is at the heart of the message of the Bible.

We rightly prize the doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. But there is a greater privilege than justification: adoption. To be called a child of God is the supreme blessing of the gospel.

The covenant refrain that runs like a golden thread through the Bible is, "I will be your God and you will be my people." God in His grace is bringing His people into covenant fellowship with Himself through His Son. The wonder of this is expressed in our adoption, for when we come to the end of the Bible's story we read: "I will be his God and he shall be my son" (Revelation 21:7).

What amazing love, that we should be called children of God! "But when the fulness of the time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons" (Galatians 4:4–5).
